Made in Dagenham Heading for the West End?

Made in Dagenham - IMDb A new West End musical based on the hit British movie Made in Dagenham is in development according to an article in the Daily Mail. Playwright Richard Bean (the man behind the hit comedy One Man, Two Guvnors) is working on the book for the show which, like the film, will tell the story of the women machinists who went on strike in 1968 at Ford’s Dagenham car plant in Essex after being classed as unskilled workers and paid far less than their male colleagues. The strike (eventually won by the women) became a political hot potato and speeded up the equal pay act of 1970.

The events surrounding the pay struggle were dramatised on screen in 2010 by an all-star cast including Sally Hawkins, Miranda Richardson, Jaime Winston Rosamund Pike and Bob Hoskins. According to the Mail, the stage version will have music by David Arnold (scorer of five James Bond films) and lyrics by Richard Thomas (Jerry Springer the Opera). A workshop of the first act is due to be held in February 2012. The show will be produced by Stage Entertainment and have an opening night sometime in 2013.

Starring Owain Arthur as Francis Henshall

Richard Bean's One Man, Two Guvnors will extend its successful London run when it transfers to the Theatre Royal Haymarket in early March 2012. Although actor James Corden will leave the production to concentrate on a Broadway transfer, his understudy Owain Arthur will step into the role of bumbling underworld minder ‘Francis Henshall’.

After arriving in the seaside town of Brighton to collect a debt for his gangland boss, Francis Henshall can’t resist taking a second job with a rival crook. However, to keep the deal sweet he must keep his two bosses apart. The only problem is that each has good reason to seek out the other!  One Man, Two Guvnors opened at the National Theatre in May 2011, directed by Nicholas Hytner, and has been nominated for several Best Play Awards since transferring to the West End.
