Mamma Mia! Takes a Chance on the Novello Theatre

ABBA-inspired musical Mamma Mia! is on the move and will transfer to its third West End home at the Novello Theatre in the summer of 2012. The hit production, written by Catherine Johnson and composed by ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, is rumoured to be making way for the new Spice Girls musical ‘Viva Forever’ which is currently in development being overseen by Mamma Mia! producer Judy Cramer. War Horse director Marianne Elliott was recently attached to the project. The show promises to be a modern-day fable that explores the themes of fame, celebrity and friendship. It has a book by Ab-Fab's Jennifer Saunders and will be set to some of the Spice Girls biggest hits. |
Global Phenomenon that Began in LondonMamma Mia! opened in London at the Prince Edward Theatre in April 1999 before moving to its current home, the Prince of Wales Theatre, in June 2004. 11 productions are now playing around the world, including versions in Las Vegas, Shanghai and New York. The show tells the story of a young girl’s attempts to discover the identity of her father on the eve of her wedding on an idyllic Greek island. After finding several possible names in her mother’s old diary, she sends letters to three men inviting them to an unforgettable reunion. The Open Air Theatre production of Crazy for You has begun previews at the Novello Theatre. The musical was first produced in 1992 after Ken Ludwig rewrote the book of the George and Ira Gershwin’s ‘Girl Crazy’. The hilarious show tells the story of Bobby Child - the showbiz obsessed son of New York fianciers who is sent to shut down a failing provincial theatre. Things get complicated when Bobby falls for the theatre manager’s daughter and decides to put on a show to keep the banks happy. Famous Gershwin numbers include: I Got Rhythm, Someone To Watch Over Me, Embraceable You and Nice Work If You Can Get It. |
