Matilda to Open at Aldwych Theatre?
|
Will the Royal Shakespeare Company's (RSC's) production of Matilda make a West End transfer this summer and replace Dirty Dancing at the Aldwych Theatre? Rumours suggest that the hilarious show - with music and lyrics by Australian composer and comedian Tim Minchin - could be set to open following rave reviews for the stage adaptation of the much-loved Roald Dahl story earlier this year. |

The RSC first announced their intentions to stage a musical version of the children's novel in 2009, with Dennis Kelly named as the playwright. The musical opened at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on 09 December 2010, running through January 2011. Her parents think she is a nuisance and she thinks, quite rightly, they are only interested in watching telly. Her mum spends all her time practising ballroom dancing while her dad gloats about his latest dodgy business deal. Life is not much better at school, where the monstrous headmistress Miss Trunchbull terrifies students and teachers alike. Then one day Matilda discovers she has a very special power and decides it's time the grown ups were taught a lesson! |

Another show mooted as a possibility is the Broadway hit Rock of Ages. Described as "Mamma Mia!" for dudes, the headbanging show is a celebration of '80s hairmetal, when bands such as Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe and Poison dominated the radio airwaves and MTV play-lists. Working as a Sunset Strip busboy, would-be rock star Drew falls for aspiring actress Sherrie. When property developers move in, determined to clean up the Strip, their hopes and dreams are thrown into jeopardy. The set list of classic rock hits includes: ‘We Built This City’, ‘Here I Go Again’ and ‘The Final Countdown’. |
