Matilda to Open in the Autumn
![]() |
In one of the West End's worst kept secrets, hit children's musical Matilda will transfer to the West End this autumn. Although the venue for the production has not yet been confirmed, the Aldwych Theatre has been strongly tipped after Dirty Dancing announced its closure prior to a national tour. The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) have revealed that tickets will go on sale in May, when performance dates and casting for the show will also be announced. |
Road Dahl's Brilliant Story Adapted for StageRoald Dahl’s ever-popular novel was adapted for the stage in Stratford-upon-Avon by Australian comedian and musician Tim Minchin and playwright Dennis Kelly. The Stratford production starred Paul Kaye and Josie Walker as Matilda's parents "Mrs and Mrs Wormwood", as well as three teams of children to play Matilda and her school friends. The RSC first revealed their intentions to stage a musical version of Matilda in 2009, with Kelly named as the writer. His previous works include Debris, After the End, Osama the Hero, DNA, Taking Care of Baby, Love and Money and The Prince of Homburg. Minchin, meanwhile, is a Perrier Award-winning performer who regularly tours his live musical comedy show around the international circuit. |

The Girl Who Discovers Some Special PowersHer parents think she is a nuisance and she thinks, quite rightly, they are only interested in watching telly. Her mother would rather spend her time ballroom dancing than bringing up her daughter, whilst her father gloats endlessly about his latest dodgy deal down at the garage. Life is not much better at school, where the monstrous headmistress Miss Trunchbull rules with a rod of iron and hands out punishments with sadistic relish. Then, one day, Matilda discovers she has a very special power, and decides it's time to get her own back and teach the grown ups a lesson! Dirty Dancing closes at the Aldwych Theatre on 09 July 2011.
