Mel C to 'Spice Up' Blood Brothers

Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm (Melanie C) will make her West End debut in October in the long-running Willie Russell musical Blood Brothers, set in her home town of Liverpool. ‘Sporty Spice’ will play the role of harried working-class mother Mrs Johnstone, succeeding another pop singer, X Factor contestant Niki Evans.

At the pinnacle of 90s ‘Girl Power’ the Spice Girls became the biggest girl band of all time, selling over 60 million records worldwide. Melanie C can count a further 3 million solo album sales and 6 top 10 singles besides that success.

Gripping Tale for Over 20 Years

Blood Brothers was first written as a gritty school production by Merseyside wordsmith Russell in the early 1980s. The playwright subsequently rewrote the show into an Olivier Award Winning musical that has gained a large cult following since being revived by impresario Bill Kenwright.

The story of the twin brothers separated at birth and growing up on either side of a class divide, before being reunited with tragic consequences, has run for a remarkable 21 years. Now the longest running show at the Phoenix Theatre, it shows no signs of flagging with age.

Mrs Johnstone a Cherished Role

The role of Mrs Johnstone is much cherished and Melanie C will follow in the footsteps of Barbara Dickson, Kiki Dee, Lyn Paul, Siobhan McCarthy, as well as four of the Nolan Sisters.

Melanie C’s opening performance will be Monday 26 October and she is scheduled to play the part for six months, excluding Saturday 31 October Matinee and Monday 2 November Evening, due to charity commitments for the Caron Keating Foundation.
