Noises Off at The Old Vic this Christmas

The Old Vic Michael Frayn’s award-winning play within a play - Noises Off - will receive its first major London revival since the year 2000 when a new production opens at The Old Vic this Christmas, directed by Lindsay Posner. The hilarious show will open on Tuesday 13th December 2011 (previews from Saturday 3rd December) and run until Saturday 25th February 2012. Full casting will be announced shortly. Tickets will be on sale soon.

A Brilliant Backstage Drama

Noises Off premiered at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1982, directed by Michael Blakemore and starred Patricia Routledge, Paul Eddington, and Nicky Henson. After fantastic reviews, the show transferred to the Savoy Theatre where it ran until 1987 with five successive casts. The title is inspired by a theatrical term for sounds heard off stage. The first act is set at the dress rehearsal of a fictional show - Nothing On – and sees the cast fumble with missed cues, fluffed lines and troublesome props. The second act goes backstage on a matinee performance one month later, with relations between the actors rapidly deteriorating. The third act, near to the end of the play’s run, reveals a cast at each other’s throats and a production desperate to be put out of its misery by the final curtain.

When Irish Eyes are Smiling

The next Old Vic production - J M Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World - will begin previews on Saturday 17th September 2011 (opening Tuesday 27th September 2011).

Robert Sheehan When young Christy Mahon (Robert Sheehan pictured left) arrives at a County Mayo pub seeking refuge after murdering his oppressive father, the locals are beguiled by his remarkable story. He soon charms the village women, including a lonely widow (Niamh Cusack) and the landlord’s impressionable daughter (Ruth Negga). However, when Christy’s tall tale turns out to be less than straightforward, the locals are quick to turn on the charismatic young dreamer with dramatic consequences.
