Nominees Announced for WhatsonStage Awards

Matilda the Musical The shortlist of nominations for the 12th annual Whatsonstage.com Awards have been announced in London with Ghost going head-to-head with Matilda for the title of Best New Musical, Danielle Hope and Kara Tointon competing for Newcomer of the Year and Wicked listed yet again as Best West End Show, having previously claimed the award in both 2010 and 2011. The WhatsonStage Awards are the only theatre industry awards voted for by the ticket-buying public and this year more than 11,000 people have cast nominations for their favourite performers and productions.

Nine Nominations for Ghost and Matilda

Besides their nominations as Best New Musical, Ghost and Matilda are facing off in all of the musical performance categories. These include Best Actor in a Musical (Bertie Carvel’s ‘Miss Trunchbull’ vs Richard Fleeshman’s ‘Sam Wheat’), Best Actress in a Musical (The four girls who alternate the role of ‘Matilda’ vs Caissie Levy’s ‘Molly Jenson’), Best Supporting Actor in a Musical (Paul Kaye as ‘Mr Wormwood’ vs Andrew Langtree as ‘Carl Bruner’) and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical (Lauren Ward as ‘Miss Honey’ vs Sharon D. Clarke as ‘Oda Mae Brown’).

Crazy for You Musical

Other big names and shows to look out for include Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Spacey, David Tennant and James Earl Jones vying for Best Actor in a Play; Kimberley Walsh, Susan McFadden and Tara Fitzgerald named for Best Takeover in a Role and Crazy for You, South Pacific and The Wizard of Oz listed for Best Musical Revival. All of the winners will be announced on Sunday 19th February 2012 at the West End’s Prince of Wales Theatre. Voting is now open at: http://awards.whatsonstage.com/vote

Many shows will perform extra Matinees over the festive period, including: Jersey Boys, The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, We Will Rock You and many more.
