Norton has 'The Best of Times' in La Cage

Last night, Graham Norton made his West End debut as flamboyant drag artiste Albin in La Cage Aux Folles and the word on the London street as that he did a great job. When it was announced that Norton would be repleacing Douglas Hodge in the Menier Chocolate Factory’s smash hit transfer, the theatre community was aghast. Although certainly no stranger to theatre as an avid musical fan and friend of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, Graham admitted in his 2005 autobiography So Me that he can’t sing.

However, those present at the Playhouse last night will testify that Graham did admirably. Although his high register was weak to start with, he was visibly shaking and his voice vastly improved throughout the show as his nerves settled. A highlight was his rendition of the classic I Am What I Am, which was apparently an emotional tour de force and brought the house down. Evidently, his intensive vocal coaching is working a treat, and as his confidence grows, Graham Norton could well become a musical theatre star.
