Oliver! makes way for Shrek?
| The hit musical Oliver! which has been delighting West End audiences for nearly two years at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, has announced it will close on 8 January 2010. |
Closure
| The show was revived in 2008 as part of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s reality show ‘I’d Do Anything’, which crowned Jodie Prenger as the new Nancy. The show has seen a number of high profiled stars in the role of Fagin, including Rowan Atkinson, Omid Djalili and Griff Rhys Jones. The show was first staged in 1960, telling the story of a young orphan, who makes his way from the workhouse to the streets of London where he meets Fagin and his crew of underage pickpockets, the thug Bill Sykes and the kind-hearted Nancy. |
Oliver! 50th Birthday
The show celebrates its 50th Birthday on 30 June and will see a special performance with guest star Ron Moody, who played Fagin in the show’s original production and film. There has been no announcement of what will replace Oliver! but fierce rumour suggest the Broadway musical of Shrek could take up residence at Drury Lane. | |
