Over the Rainbow: The Search for Dorothy Begins

Posted by Ben on Tuesday 17th November 2009 at 4:11PM

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber has launched his search for an actress to play Dorothy in the new West End production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

A prime-time BBC One talent show, ‘Over the Rainbow’, will see open auditions held for the part. The nationwide talent search will begin in January next year, with applicants encouraged to apply regardless of their level of experience.

Previous Winners

‘Over The Rainbow’ follows on from the success of previous BBC shows ‘How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria?’, ‘Any Dream Will Do’ and ‘I’d Do Anything’. The shows catapulted winners Connie Fisher, Lee Mead and Jodie Prenger (pictured as Nancy in Oliver!) into the West End limelight.

The familiar format will see Dorothy-wannabes whittled down until only a few remain. The aspiring actresses will then face off against each other, with the help of a public vote to choose the winner of the coveted role.

The Magic of ‘The Wizard’

The musical fantasy, based on the novel by L. Frank Baum, was made into a classic film starring Judy Garland in 1939. The story has been revisited in recent times by hit West End musical ‘Wicked’, currently showing at the Apollo Victoria Theatre.

Busy Year for Sir Andrew

‘Over the Rainbow’ is part of a busy calendar for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber; his ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ sequel ‘Love Never Dies’ opens at the Adelphi Theatre in the spring of 2010.
