A pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz will be sold in California this December and could fetch between $2 million and $3 million according to auction estimates reported in the media. The shoes are one of four pairs used in the film that are known to be in existence, and are in near perfect condition despite their seventy year age. Another pair used in a screen test for the picture was sold at auction by the actress Debbie Reynolds for $612,000 earlier this summer, giving an indication of just how sought after the red hot heels have become. |
The Most Important Film Prop in the WorldThe ruby slippers will be auctioned on 16th December 2011 in Los Angeles as part of a Hollywood memorabilia sale. Their current owner is believed to be a Missouri fine art collector who bought them through Christie’s in 1988 for $165,000. Joe Maddalena, owner of the Profiles in History Auction House, is expecting bids from around the world: "This is the most important film prop in the world. There is nothing more famous," he said. "They are one of the greatest pieces of pop culture in existence." Wizard of Oz Extends West End Booking |
