Latin music star Ricky Martin will return to Broadway in March 2012 when he takes the role of ‘Che’ in a revival of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical Evita. The Puerto Rico-born singer began his performing career in musical theatre and made his Broadway debut in 1996 as ‘Marius’ in Les Misérables. He released his first English language album in 1999, which included the smash hit ‘Livin La Vida Loca’. It went on to sell more than 22 million copies and established him as a global star.

Evita hasn’t been seen on the Great White Way for nearly 30 years, although it enjoyed an incredible run of more than 1,500 performances following its dazzling debut in 1979. Argentinean actress Elena Roger will play ‘Eva’, a role she performed in the 2006 West End production. The show closed at the Adelphi Theatre in May 2007.

Evita - The Life and Death of an Icon

Based on the remarkable life story of Argentina’s former First Lady, Evita follows the rise of Maria Eva Duarte from humble beginnings to the presidential mansion, winning international acclaim and the adoration of her people along the way. After moving to Buenos Aires to try her luck as an actress, the ravishing young Eva catches the eye of Colonel Juan Peron, one of the leading figures in the country’s military regime. When Peron is arrested by political rivals, it is Eva who begins a crusade amongst the ordinary people for his release. Soon Peron is swept into power with Eva by his side. But her glamorous image and charitable work hide political oppression, financial controversy and failing health. The musical includes the brilliant songs: Another Suitcase in another Hall, You Must Love Me and Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.
