Samantha Barks to Play Eponine in Les Mis Movie

Former I’d Do Anything finalist Samantha Barks received a big surprise at the curtain call of Oliver! at Manchester’s Palace Theatre last night when impresario Cameron Mackintosh came onto the stage to announce that she had won the role of ‘Eponine’ in the new Hollywood adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. Barks had previously starred as ‘Eponine’ in the West End production and reprised the role for the show’s 25th anniversary concert at the O2 Arena. American country-pop singer Taylor Swift had been strongly linked with the part, so it was quite a shock for the Isle of Man-born actress. |
Joins A-List Cast for Hollywood Blockbuster!Samantha Barks finished third in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s televised search for a ‘Nancy’ for his West End revival of Oliver! in May 2008. She was soon cast in the leading role of ‘Sally Bowles’ for the UK tour of Cabaret, opposite veteran dancer Wayne Sleep as the 'Emcee'. She made her West End debut as ‘Eponine’ in June 2010, playing the role for just under a year at the Queens Theatre. She will join Anne Hathaway (Fantine), Eddie Redmayne (Marius), Aaron Tveit (Enjolras), Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean) Russell Crowe (Javert), Sacha Baron Cohen (Thenardier), Helena Bonham Carter (Madame Thenardier) and Amanda Seyfried (Cossette) in the film, which will be directed by Tom Hooper (The Kings Speech) and have a potential release date of December 2012. |
