Shaftesbury Avenue Q

Posted by Jack on Monday 9th March 2009 at 3:48PM

The hearts of thousands of fans were broken last year when the end of Avenue Q was announced. Good news for them, its proposed closure at the end of this month has been reconsidered and the show will instead transfer from the Noel Coward to the Gielgud Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue.

Talking about the decision to carry on the hit puppet musical, producer Cameron Macintosh said that since the closing date was announced, “business has surged to such an extent that I’m delighted to announce that Avenue Q is going to continue its run on the Avenue – Shaftesbury that is – at the start of June.”

As Macintosh says, there will be a two month break for Avenue Q before it resumes performances at its new home. This is presumably to make time for the transfer of the myriad of sets, props, costumes and equipment from house to house, and perhaps for the cast (including Julie Atherton, left) to carry out their post-puppet plans. However, casting for the show’s extension has not been announced, so it is unclear as to who from the current cast will be transferring with the show. Watch this space!

Tickets for Avenue Q’s new season at the Gielgud Theatre will be on sale soon. Avenue Q is currently booking at the Noel Coward Theatre until 28 March 2009. Tickets are available here.
