Singin’ in the Rain Seeks West End Shelter?

Posted by Hannah on Monday 18th July 2011 at 3:40PM

The Chichester Festival Theatre production of Singin’ in the Rain is the latest show from the influential Sussex venue to be tipped for a West End transfer later this year. The story closely follows the plot of the 1952 movie that starred Gene Kelly as ‘Don Lockwood’ - a leading silent film star who must adjust to life in talking pictures. Don’s got the voice to guarantee success, unfortunately his glamorous blonde co-star, Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), exasperates everyone with her rasping vocals and oversized ego. Thankfully, Don’s best friend Cosmo (Donald O’Connor) comes up with a brilliant idea. Unknown actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) is a wonderful singer and can easily be dubbed in Lina’s place.

What a Glorious Feeling

Singin in the Rain The Chichester production boasts an impressive cast, including ballet star Adam Cooper (Swan Lake, Guys and Dolls) as ‘Don Lockwood’. Daniel Crossley (Hello Dolly) gets several show-stopping lines as ‘Cosmo’, Katherine Kingsley (Aspects of Love) is the peroxide problem ‘Lina Lamont’ and Scarlett Strallen (Passion) plays the spirited ‘Kathy’. Like the movie, the plot is held up by some incredible song and dance routines - including the front-row drenching title song that sees Cooper slide and splash his way across the stage with remarkable poise and precision.

Heading for the Palace Theatre?

The Palace Theatre, currently home to Priscilla Queen of the Desert, is one potential London venue for Singin’ in the Rain. Closing notices have not yet been officially posted for Priscilla however the show’s publicity team recently issued a statement to the Whatsonstage website to say that the cast and crew have been informed of the likelihood that the show will end its three year West End run at the end of the year.

Singin’ in the Rain was previously seen in West End between 1983 and 1985 when it played at the London Palladium with Tommy Steele and Roy Castle among the cast. It was produced at the National Theatre in 2000, directed by Jude Kelly with choreography by Stephen Mear. Another production by the renowned choreographer played at Sadler’s Wells in 2004.
