Starlight Express to Roll Again in 2012?

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express looks likely to roll again in 2012 with a new UK tour produced by Bill Kenwright Ltd. The West End musical played over 7,400 performances at the Apollo Victoria Theatre between 1984 and 2002. By the end of its run it had been seen by eight million people and taken more than £140 million at the box office. A UK tour opened in November 2004 in Manchester. This version was brought to the stage by several members of the original creative team, including designer John Napier and choreographer Arlene Phillips. It went on to visit cities around Europe before finishing its run in March 2008 at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. |
A Show with a Lotta’ LocomotionThe voice of Control orders all the engines to racing mode and the rolling stock gathers on stage to jostle for places in the championship heats. Rusty, an old steam engine relegated to the sidings, dreams of winning the competition, but no one seems fast enough to challenge Greaseball and his gang of diesel thugs. As the engines pair up with their carriages for the opening race, Rusty is left unconnected as Pearl, the new girl, decides to race with an electric train instead. Poppa, a retired champion steamer, comes to Rusty’s aid by introducing him to Belle, the sleeping car. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe wrote Starlight Express as a tribute to the age of steam. The show is famous for being performed entirely on roller skates, with each character having their own set of moves to match their unique personality. Cast members often train for months to reach the required skating standard. A number of Starlight Express recordings have been released over the years. Memorable musical numbers include: A Lotta Locomotion, U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D., I Am The Starlight, Make Up My Heart and Light at the End of the Tunnel. |
