Strictly Ballroom to Premiere in Sydney

The stage musical version of Strictly Ballroom will receive its world premiere in Sydney according to reports on BroadwayWorld.com following an announcement by the show’s creator Baz Luhrmann and his fellow Australian producers. As revealed last October, Global Creatures and Bazmark (the multimedia company founded by Luhrmann and Catherine Martin) have been busy running a creative workshop of the book, text and music for the new show which will be closely based on the hit 1992 movie that reignited interest in ballroom dancing around the world. The completed show will debut at the Sydney Lyric Theatre from September 2013. |
A Brilliant Film about a Maverick DancerMade on a shoestring budget of less than $5M, Strictly Ballroom tells the story of an Australian dancer named Scott Hastings whose dream is to win a prestigious ballroom dancing contest with his own unique style of dance. Scott’s mother, Shirley, is a ballroom dancing teacher. His father, Doug, meekly handles maintenance at the studio. When Scott’s partner Liz leaves him on the eve of the contest, he must find a substitute who shares his passion for doing things differently. Strictly Ballroom rose to worldwide fame after winning the Prix de la Jeunesse at the Cannes Film Festival. Writer and Director Baz Luhrmann based the story on his own experiences growing up around the world of competitive ballroom dancing. He went on to direct Moulin Rouge! and Australia. |
