The King’s Speech to be heard in West End?

Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech seems set to be adapted for the stage and could open in the West End as early as March next year, according to theatre industry rumours. The movie, which picked up four Academy Awards in 2011, including Best Picture, starred Colin Firth as King George VI and Geoffrey Rush as Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue. It tells the story of how King George IV’s ascension to the throne (after his older brother’s unexpected abdication) forces him to seek help from a radical speech therapist to overcome his debilitating stammer when speaking in public. |
Film Cast Unlikely to ReturnThe Kings Speech screenwriter David Seidler apparently produced a stage treatment as well as his highly-acclaimed script for the film. Former Royal Shakespeare Company artistic director Adrian Noble is rumoured to be onboard as director for the project. There is no word on who might be cast in the show, however, it is believed that Geoffrey Rush might be persuaded to reprise his role as Lionel Logue. Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter would be unlikely to return. Reports suggest that the production could open at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford for a short three to five run in January, before making a London transfer in March 2012.
