Graham Linehan’s new adaptation of the classic Ealing comedy The Ladykillers has set a box office record at the Gielgud Theatre by taking nearly £400,000 in a single week. The production opened to excellent reviews in early December and recently announced an extension to its booking period until Saturday 14 April 2012. The record was set during the last week of 2011, between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, as theatregoers took advantage of the Christmas holidays to confirm the play as one of London’s top shows. |
A Farcical New Stage ComedyThe Ladykillers tells the story of a little old lady named Mrs Wilberforce who is seemingly defenceless when a criminal gang con their way into her London home by posing as a group of musicians. The gang plan to stage an audacious robbery of a security van at nearby Kings Cross Station. With Mrs W and her parrots soon unwittingly involved in the plot, things begin to unravel for Professor Marcus and his fellow crooks in hilarious and spectacular fashion. Scriptwriter Graham Linehan is the man behind such acclaimed TV comedies Father Ted and The IT Crowd. Starring a Top Notch CastThe cast for The Ladykillers includes the BAFTA Award-winning actor Peter Capaldi (best known for playing the acerbic press secretary Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It), Ben Miller (The Armstrong and Miller Show), Clive Rowe (often the renowned pantomime dame at the Hackney Empire), James Fleet (Hugo Horton in The Vicar of Dibley), Stephen Wright (The Evening Standard’s Outstanding Newcomer of the Year) and Marcia Warren (a double Olivier Award-winner). |
