Thriller Live dims lights in honour of Jacko
Thriller Live will dim its lights on Shaftesbury Avenue tonight in respect for Michael Jackson, whose funeral takes place in Los Angeles today.
The Lyric Theatre, where Thriller Live is staged, has become a Mecca for London’s Michael Jackson fans. It has also welcomed a great deal of foreign custom as thousands of Jacko fans eager to see their hero in concert had already booked flights and hotels in London. Flowers, candles, and tributes adorn the steps of the theatre. A drawing of Jacko is even pinned to one of the theatre doors, saying, ‘Gone Too Soon’.

In early June, the success of the show apparently led producers to discuss a parade of stars to take the lead in the show. These are rumoured to include Chaka Khan and Alexander O’Neal. It now looks highly likely that this could happen, as the tragedy of Jackson’s passing has cemented Thriller Live’s status as a West End smash. In the twelve days since Jackson’s tragic death, the Lyric Theatre has reportedly sold over 70,000 tickets.
A UK tour runs concurrently with the West End production and tonight it reaches Birmingham’s Alexandra Theatre. The Alexandra will also dim its lights in honour of Jackson. There are now talks of taking the tribute abroad and it is assumed that the UK touring production will go international instead of a brand new production.
Michael Jackson’s private funeral takes place in Los Angeles today. It will be followed by a public memorial at LA’s Staples Center, where Jackson rehearsed for the proposed O2 dates. Almost 2 million fans applied for the 17,500 tickets available for the memorial.
Thriller Live is currently booking in the West End until January 2010 and you can get your tickets here.
