UK Tickets Profile: Jason Donovan
Background
Jason Donovan was born June 1968 in Malvern Australia, to Australian actor Terence Donovan. Donovan, some say, was destined to become an actor, with both his father and sister in the industry and the pair, ironically, have appeared in the hit Australian soap Neighbours. Donovan attended the Catholic all boy’s De La Salle College in Malvern. His first taste of the entertainment world came at age 11 when Donovan had a guest role in the Australian series ‘Skyways’, teaming him up with his on-screen sister Kylie Minogue. Donovan also featured in the series ‘I Can Jump Puddles’. It wasn’t until 1986 that Donovan propelled to stardom as Scott Robinson in the hit soap ‘Neighbours’. The soap saw Donovan once again team up with Minogue. After winning numerous awards, Donovan left the soap in 1989.
Singing Career
Whilst still appearing in Neighbours, Donovan followed in Minogue’s footsteps by signing a recording contract in Australia and the UK. His first single, ‘Nothing Can Divide Us,’ reached the UK number 5 spot in 1988. After their on screen romance in Neighbours, Donovan and Minogue teamed up for the international smash duet hit ‘Especially For You,’ reaching number 1 in the UK. Donovan continued to clock up further top 10 and number 1 hits until 1992, becoming popular both in the UK and Australia. |
Joseph
After his success as Scott in Neighbours, his music career and his first feature film, ‘Blood Oath’, Donovan accepted the role of Joseph in the revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ at the London Palladium. Already a household name in the UK and Australia Donovan’s career propelled further, with another number 1 single with ‘Any Dream Will Do’ and the show winning the prestigious 1992 Laurence Olivier Award for set design and costume design. After a hugely successful run Donovan left the show in 1993 to take some time out. |
Other Projects
![]() | After he left Joseph, Donovan encountered numerous personal problems, putting his career on a back burner, with few theatre or music attempts. In 1998 he took the lead role of DR. Frank N. Furter in the UK touring production of ‘The Rocky Horror Show’, where he met his future stage manager wife Angela Malloch. After the Birth of their first child, Jemma in 2000, Donovan’s personal problems were behind him. |
2004 saw Donovan return to the stage in the musical ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, a return for Donovan to the London Palladium. In 2006 he played Sweeney Todd in Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Sweeney Todd the musical’. Donovan took part in ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’ in 2006 and became the voice of the popular Playstation game ‘Buzz!’ Since 2008 Donovan has concentrated once again on his music career, with new material and a UK Tour.
Current - Priscilla Queen Of The Desert
In 2009, Donovan took on a leading role as Tick/Mitzi in the musical production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert at the Palace Theatre. The West End had never seen so much glitter, wigs, high heels and lipstick until Priscilla arrived in the Spring of 2009. The show is based on the Oscar winning film of the same name. Donovan stars along side the hunky Oliver Thornton and Don Gallagher. | ![]() |
The show tells the heart-warming and uplifting story of Mitzi, Bernadette and Felicia, a glamorous Sydney based performing trio who agree to take their show to the middle of the Australian outback. The three friends set off in a battered old bus, Priscilla, in search of love and adventure but end up finding more than they could ever have dreamed. Full of outrageous comedy, outfits and fun, this is one show that will have you dancing in the aisles. | ![]() |
