UK Tickets Profile: John Barrowman

On stage:

John Barrowman made his professional stage debut in Anything Goes at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1989. His other West End credits included Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Grease, Chicago and The Phantom of the Opera.

His recording career has also taken him around the world on numerous concert tours. He recently completed a brief UK tour with Avenue Q actor Daniel Boys to promote his current album Music Music Music.

From 14 September, John will be starring as Albin in the Menier Chocolate Factory production of La Cage Aux Folles, currently playing at the Playhouse.

Off stage:

Barrowman has just completed a follow up to his autobiography Anything Goes. Entitled I Am What I Am, its October release will coincide with his appearance in La Cage Aux Folles.

He has also taken part in various radio plays, including a number of Torchwood productions, and has played Raoul on Andrew Lloyd Webber's concept album for Love Never Dies.

On screen:

Best known as an all round television personality, Barrowman has acted, presented and even judged on the small screen. His character in Doctor Who, Jack Harkness, was so popular he got his own spin off series, Torchwood. In America, he has starred in the soap operas Titans and Central Park West.

Barrowman’s film credits include The Producers, De-Lovely, Method and the low budget cult classic Shark Attack 3: Megalodon.

He has guest presented a number of TV programmes and now fronts Tonight’s the Night, his own Saturday night variety show. He has also been a judge on all of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s TV talent searches.

Currently:

Making guest appearances on TV and radio to promote his new autobiography and his upcoming appearance in La Cage Aux Folles.

Trivia:

Barrowman came very close to playing Will in the US comedy series Will and Grace. He was eventually rejected in favour of Eric McCormack because he was ‘too straight’.

Barrowman was born in Glasgow, where he lived for the first eight years of his life. Despite his mid-Atlantic brogue, he still speaks with a Scottish accent to his family.

John Barrowman is known for his lack of inhibitions and once caused a stir when he exposed himself during a Radio 1 interview.
