UKTickets Review: Chicago at the Cambridge Theatre

Posted by Ben on Friday 20th August 2010 at 2:46PM

The record-breaking revival of Chicago transferred to the Cambridge Theatre in 2006 after 9 successful years at the Adelphi. The famous faces come and go – Tony Hadley, Jerry Springer, Tina Arena and Michelle Williams, among others – but this sizzling show just keeps on going!

EastEnder Emma Barton currently plays the role of ‘Roxie Hart’ (seen below), whilst West End newcomer Vivien Carter has stepped up into the role of the murderous ‘Velma Kelly’.

The Old Razzle-Dazzle

How the show remains such a fan pleaser after all these years isn’t hard to see. Set in the turbulent times of 1920s Chicago, showgirl Roxie Hart commits a cold-blooded murder whilst having an affair - causing quite a stir in the ‘Windy City’!  Awaiting trial in an all-female cellblock, Roxie realises that her newfound notoriety might give her flagging career an unexpected lift. With the help of a slick and smooth-talking attorney, the press are razzle-dazzled and her rivals left in the dirt. But with celebrity such a fickle beast, can the ambitious Roxie really make her crime pay?

Can't Do it Alone

Emma Barton (Roxie) and Vivien Carter (Velma) are both strong performers. Barton is a fine actress who captures the softness and vulnerability of the role, before switching in the blink of an eye to show the dark side of Roxie’s scheming nature. Carter is an excellent dancer. She is particularly impressive with her demonstration of a one-woman double act in the musical number ‘I Can’t Do It Alone’.

Terrence Maynard (Billy Flynn) brilliantly fills the outsize personality of the sharp showbiz attorney. Adam Stafford (Amos Hart) reprises the role he played on the UK tour. A fine physical comedian and outstanding singer, Stafford's pint-size Amos is far from Mr Cellophane.

Among the rest of the Chicago cast, Lisa Norman grabs the eye as ‘Go-To-Hell Kitty’ and R. Whitehead impresses and surprises as celebrity columnist ‘Mary Sunshine’.

All That Jazz

With sultry Bob Fosse-inspired choreography and unforgettable songs including ‘All That Jazz’ and ‘Nowadays’, Chicago will remain a must-see show on the West End for some time to come.
