UKTickets Review: Love Never Dies
The Verdict
| Love Never Dies, the outstanding new musical from the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber. Marketed as ‘Phantom: The Story Continues…’ Lover Never Dies follows on from the successful world wide hit The Phantom Of The Opera. It must be stressed at this point though, it is not compulsory to see the first to enjoy Love Never Dies, but it would definitely help with your enjoyment and involvement in the show. |
Love Never Dies is set on Coney Island, ten years after the disappearance of the Phantom from the Paris Opera house. The show opens to a rather dark, gloomy beginning but the stage soon comes to life with effective computer projection, creating scenes that are far too big to fit on stage. The use of projection sounds tacky, this is Andrew Lloyd Webber after all and if anyone can pull it off, he can. The show is a little slow to start; this is mainly due to each character being introduced to the audience for those who have not seen Phantom.
Ramin & Sierra The turning point in the show is when Christine Daeé arrives for the first time with her husband Raoul and son Gustav, the show starts to pick up pace. Soon Christine, played by Sierra Boggess, is back with the Phantom, played by Ramin Karimloo who has just transferred from The Phantom Of The Opera, and they perform the outstanding new songs ‘Beneath A Moonless Sky’ and ‘Once Upon Another Time’. The chemistry created in these songs is electrifying, passionate and lustful; we get a glimpse of Christine’s pure passion and love for the Phantom. The vocal performances are outstanding, rivalling many other West End performers |
|
Another key moment in the show is when the Phantom meets Christine’s son Gustav, the scene is set within the Phantom’s new lair, with many freak show objects all around. The song ‘The Beauty Underneath’, performed by the Phantom and Gustav, has an edgy rock feel and is a stand out for the show. Children actors on some occasions can not always match up to the rest of the adult cast, this was not case in last night performance, the two were on par.
Summary Without going further to ruin the story, which will have many crying by the end, Love Never Dies did deliver. With an amazing cast, some of the best vocal performances in the West End, excellent modern set and a new score to rival any musical, the show is ready to become as successful as its big brother The Phantom Of The Opera. Phantom fans from around the world are guaranteed to flock to the Adelphi Theatre, where the new musical resides. With oustanding performances all round, it was hard to believe the show was only on its 3rd preview.
