West End Protests Against Parking Charges
![]() |
Proposals to introduce new evening and weekend parking charges in the West End have caused uproar this week with many public figures, including Andrew Lloyd Webber and London Mayor Boris Johnson, speaking out against Westminster Council’s plans. From Monday 9th January 2012 free parking on single yellow lines between 6.30pm and midnight (Mon to Fri) and between 1pm and 6pm (Sun) will end and charges of up to £4.80 an hour in bays apply. The council argue that the measures are necessary to ease traffic congestion whilst opponents believe it is a stealth tax on nightlife in the theatre district. |

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Impresario Lord Lloyd Webber said: "In our industry alone, the benefit in terms of revenue to the council will be exceeded many times over by loss of sales, not to mention the inconvenience to families of Londoners who look to weekend parking to enjoy theatre, one of the city's greatest assets." The Theatreland Parking SchemeFor those seeking more secure off-street parking, the Theatreland Parking Scheme has been in operation since 2009, implemented by Westminster Council and now run by Q-Park. The scheme enables West End visitors to save 50% on the standard daily rate at participating car parks by validating their parking ticket at the theatre box office. The offer is valid seven days a week and at Q-Park car parks including: Trafalgar Square, Chinatown, Soho, Oxford Street, Marble Arch / Park Lane and Pimlico.
