Wicked Aiming to Inspire Young Writers

Posted by Ben on Wednesday 24th February 2010 at 11:27AM

Wicked has launched a new educational award this week to encourage and develop the next generation of writing talent. The Wicked Young Writers’ Award will accept entries from children and young people across the UK and Northern Ireland. It will be led to a panel of judges including Warhorse author Michael Morpurgo and Wicked author Gregory Maguire.

Aged 5 to 25?

Entries will be split into four age categories for children between the ages of 5 and 16.  Meanwhile, an individual Gregory Maguire award, for ages 17 to 25, will encourage young adults to take a well known story and examine it from a different perspective. This is similar to the idea of Gregory Maguire’s own novel, 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West', the inspiration for the smash-hit musical.

What Can Young Writers Win?

20 winners will be announced in each age category and invited to attend a prize-giving ceremony at the home of Wicked, London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre. All 100 winning entries will be published in a special anthology. The overall winners in each age category will receive tickets to see the West End production. They will also receive a writing master class from one of the well-known author judges.

How to Enter?

Entries will be accepted until Saturday 31 July 2010. Young people can enter either pieces written at home or at school, on a theme or subject of their own choice. Schools will be encouraged to enter through an online teachers’ resource. Entries must be typewritten and no longer than 750 words. Full details of the competition can be found online at the Wicked Young Writers’ Award

Wicked in line for an Audience Award?

It was recently announced that Wicked had made the shortlist for the Audience Award at the 2010 Laurence Olivier Awards. The award, voted for by theatregoers themselves, will crown the West End’s favourite long-running show.

Five shows have made the final shortlist (Billy Elliot, Phantom, Warhorse, We Will Rock You and Wicked). Cast Your Vote Here.
