Will Lloyd Webber Sell the Palace Theatre?

Posted by Ben on Thursday 11th August 2011 at 10:26AM

The sale of the Palace Theatre by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group may happen in the future, according to reports from The Stage. The venue, currently home to Priscilla Queen of the Desert, was one of the theatres which were subject to a takeover bid from a consortium led by former ITV Chairman Michael Grade and theatrical agent Michael Linnit earlier this year. Apparently negotiations are at an early stage with an unnamed bidder, possibly the Ambassador Theatre Group, which would see the Grade II listed building change ownership in a multi-million pound deal. Other options are also under consideration, including the possibility of entering into a partnership in a bid to raise funds to redevelop the historic theatre.

The New Year Sale that Fell Through

Palace Theatre The sale of four West End theatres owned by the Really Useful Group fell through in December 2010 after a deal, worth in the region of £50 million, collapsed. The venues - the Palace, the Cambridge, Her Majesty’s and the New London – are all home to hugely successful shows, including Chicago, Phantom of the Opera and War Horse. The sale did not include Lord Lloyd Webber’s intellectual property rights, and would not have affected theatregoers being able to attend the shows.

The Really Useful Group also owns several other London theatres, including a half-share in the Adelphi (co-owned with the Nederlander Group), and the ‘crown jewels’ of the West End, the London Palladium (home to The Wizard of Oz) and Theatre Royal Drury Lane (home to Shrek the Musical).

Last Dance for Priscilla in December?

Although closing notices have not yet been officially posted, the Priscilla Queen of the Desert publicity team issued a statement to the Whatsonstage website in June to say that the London cast and crew have been informed of the likelihood that the colourful musical will end its three year West End run at the end of the 2011.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert Tickets Just like the 1994 Oscar-winning film, the show follows the story of a glamorous Sydney performing trio, Mitzi, Felicia and Bernadette, who embark of the trip of a lifetime across the Australian Outback in a battered old bus. Each man is on a personal journey, but together they end up finding more adventure than they could ever have dreamed. Fabulous dance floor classics, include Don’t Leave Me This Way, I Say A Little Prayer, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, MacArthur Park and Boogie Wonderland.
