X Factor's Diana wins West End role

Posted by Jack on Friday 10th July 2009 at 9:49AM

X Factor finalist Diana Vickers will play the lead in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, the role that made Jane Horrocks famous.

After X Factor
Seventeen year old Vickers finished fourth in the fifth series of the X Factor last year. She impressed the judges and public alike with her unique, gentle vocal style. The Rise and Fall of Little Voice will be her acting debut. Since leaving the competition, she has made numerous personal appearances and is currently recording her debut album.

Diana will join other X Factor alumni Ray Quinn and Scott Bruton in the West End. Ray currently stars as Danny Zuko in Grease while fellow series 5 finalist Scott Bruton appears as Bobby in the rock'n'roll jukebox musical Dreamboats and Petticoats.

Challenging
The play tells the story of Laura, also known as Little Voice, a young agoraphobe who almost constantly refuses to speak. She spends her time listening to her deceased father’s collection of vintage records. Alone, she deftly imitates performances of such legendary singers as Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey and Edith Piaf, making for a hugely challenging role for any actress. Her world is turned upside down when her alcoholic mother’s seedy boyfriend wants her to perform in his sordid nightclub.

The Rise and Rise...
Jim Cartwright’s play was a huge success at the National in 1992, starring Jane Horrocks and Alison Steadman, and later transferred to the West End’s Aldwych Theatre. In 1998, Jane Horrocks reprised the role of Laura in the successful 1998 film adaptation Little Voice, alongside Brenda Blethyn and Michael Caine.

The return of Little Voice
This brand new production will be the play’s first London revival since its triumphant run in the early 1990’s. Performances will begin at the Vaudeville Theatre on 8 October 2009. Tickets will be on sale in the next couple of weeks. Further casting is yet to be announced.
