History:
Designed as a pair with what is now known as the Gielgud Theatre by famous theatre architect WR Sprague, the Queens Theatre opened in 1907 with The Sugar Bowl, a comedy play which closed after only thirty six performances. The theatre played host to a number of comic plays with varying degrees of success, but really made its name in 1909 when it began to stage Shakespeare and other classics.
The Queens was one of the theatres most devastated by the Blitz, suffering a direct hit in September 1940. While the backs of the circles were badly damaged, the theatre’s façade and front of house areas were completely destroyed three people were killed. The theatre did not open its doors again until almost twenty years later in 1959 with Ages Of Man, a one man performance by John Gielgud of a selection of Shakespeare’s speeches and sonnets.
The Queens Theatre has continued to stage a variety of productions, again with varying degrees of success, including Kenneth Branagh’s West End debut in Another Country (1982) and the production of Jeffrey Archer’s first play Beyond Reasonable Doubt (1987). Les Misérables, London’s longest ever running musical, transferred from the Palace Theatre to the Queens in 2004 where it is now in its twenty-first year.
Hauntings:
The Queens Theatre has seen a great deal of spooky activity, with apparitions of a man, a Victorian lady and a ‘gay’ ghost who sneaks up on unsuspecting men and pinches their bottoms.

Stage door location:
The stage door can be found behind the theatre in a small side street that runs between Wardour Street and Rupert Street.
Theatre layout:
The traditional three tiered Stalls, Dress Circle, Upper Circle arrangement, the Queens Theatre’s seating hides no surprises. The Stalls are arranged in one block, with the overhang from the Dress Circle only affecting the view for the last three rows (T-V). The production is large-scale on a rather high stage so a number of seats in the first two rows (BB and A) may have trouble with the view.
The Upper Circle is set high above the Dress Circle, and so the Dress Circle offers clear views all the way to the back, although the very ends of row A do suffer a little from sideline view. Because of the height of the Upper Circle, much of its seating is restricted view so the main consensus is that the more central you are in the Upper Circle, the better the view will be. There are no boxes available for the Queens theatre.
