History:
Originally built in 1870, the Vaudeville Theatre has managed to be remodelled three times without ever being demolished, fitting for a theatre that holds a great reputation for success. In the year of its opening, legendary actor Henry Irving made his name as Digby Grant in the phenomenally successful Two Roses, which ran for an extraordinary 300 nights at the Vaudeville. This was followed five years later by HJ Byron’s Our Boys, which not only became the first theatrical production in the world to run for 500 performances, but eventually achieved a run of over 1,000. An exciting achievement for the times, the term ‘Our Boys’ came to refer to the Vaudeville Theatre in general by London residents. Other long runs during this period included The French made which ran for 480 nights from 1897, JM Barrie’s Quality Street which notched up 459 performances from 1901 and 1904’s 621 night run of The Catch of the Season. More recent notable productions have included the record breaking Salad Days, which ran for 2,283 performances from 1954, the London premiere of Arsenic and Old Lace (1966), Shirley Valentine (1988) and Stomp, which ran for exactly five years between 2002 and 2007 before transferring to the Ambassadors Theatre.

The Vaudeville Theatre stage door is located at the rear of the building on Maiden Lane.
Theatre layout:
The Vaudeville Theatre is arranged on three levels: stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle, each of them in single blocks. The stalls and Dress Circle offer clear views throughout, with overhang restricting the view from the back four rows of the stalls (P-S) and the back two rows of the Dress Circle (J and K).
The Upper Circle is set rather far forward and combined with the height, the view from here isn’t great. However, that’s not to say the view is severely restricted and the Upper Circle does offer great value for money from rows C and beyond.
