Palace of Westminster

Sections:
Royal buildings have stood on the site since 1024. The Palace of Westminster was eventually abandoned by Henry VIII in 1530, but officially, it remains a royal residence. Although it still contains royal apartments, the palace has been used for Parliamentary purposes for over 400 years.
In 1834, a fire broke out in the House of Lords and destroyed almost the entire complex. The damage was so severe that King William IV considered giving Buckingham Palace to Parliament. Work on the current, neo-Classical design was completed in the early 1870’s, although sessions had recommenced on the site in 1852.
The current building is comprised of the Houses of Parliament, the royal apartments and several towers, including Big Ben. Inside, there are over 1,100 rooms, 100 staircases and over three miles of corridors.
